It’s a Tough Regiment

Mountain Rage is not the only well-regarded 3-year-old turf runner in trainer Bob Baffert’s barn. Regiment, a son of Outflanker, who is a son of Danzig, has won four in a row and will try to extend his streak in the $200,000 Cinema Breeders’ Cup Handicap at Hollywood Park.

Owned by Prince Ahmed Salman’s Thoroughbred Corp., Regiment earned his first win sprinting on the main track when breaking his maiden March 17 at Santa Anita.

Switched to the grass for his next start, he sprinted to a three-length win at Santa Anita, stretched out for an allowance win at Hollywood Park, then earned his first stakes victory in the $200,000 Diamond A USA Stakes in Texas last month.

The 122-pound highweight, he will be ridden by regular companion David Flores and will break from the inside. He will be coupled in the wagering with Johar, who is also owned by the Thoroughbred Corp.

The one to beat in the Grade III Cinema, at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, is Inesperado. Owned by 3 Plus U Stable and trained by Bobby Frankel, the French-bred won four of nine in his native land and has trained well for his first start since March 12.

The Cinema field is completed by Point Prince, Sunkosi, Mananan McLir and Gobi Dan.

Race of the day: Super Quercus, who has two Grade I victories on the Hollywood Park turf, is scheduled to make his first start of 2002 in the seventh, a $62,000 optional claimer at 1 1/4 miles on the grass. His trainer, Frankel, also entered Lord Flasheart. Other contenders include Slew The Red, Sumati and Little Ghazi.

Who’s hot: Alex Solis. The jockey won four races Saturday.

Who’s not: Double Our Flag and Ice It Is. The two maidens are winless in 58 races entering today’s seventh at Pleasanton.

Exotically speaking: Exacta boxes in the fifth keying Sarigor with Islander and Navel Academy.
