Full Review Asked for PG&E;’s Fuel Rod Plans

Residents concerned about aboveground storage of used radioactive fuel rods asked county officials to analyze all options before approving Pacific Gas & Electric’s plan.

More than 75 people attended Monday’s county meeting on the utility’s storage plans at the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant. They want a full analysis by the county before consideration of a license to build an aboveground dry-cask storage facility.

PG&E; wants to build a series of concrete pads behind the power plant that will house as many as 138 casks containing spent nuclear rods from Diablo’s two reactors.
