Giants’ Bonds Makes Splashy Move
SAN FRANCISCO — Barry Bonds keeps moving up the career home run list, and even his opponents are in awe.
Bonds homered twice to move within one of Mark McGwire for fifth place on the all-time list, leading the San Francisco Giants past the Florida Marlins, 10-5, Saturday afternoon at Pacific Bell Park.
Bonds went three for three with two walks. The home runs gave him 582 in his career.
“He has more power than anyone in the game right now,” Florida’s Eric Owens said. “Even with the wind blowing in at 50 mph, those balls are still going out as hard as he hit them.”
Giant Manager Dusty Baker left the dugout and was helped to the clubhouse in the eighth inning after feeling dizzy. Tests showed he was slightly dehydrated.
“It has to do with baseball, not getting enough sleep and a little stress,” Giant trainer Stan Conte said. “He just felt a little dizzy. Five minutes after we got him to the clubhouse he was fine.”
Conte said the spell was unrelated to Baker’s surgery in December for prostate cancer.
“I’m fine,” Baker said 45 minutes after the game. “I’m not dizzy anymore.”
Bonds hit a two-run drive against Brad Penny (3-3) in the second inning and a bases-empty homer against Vic Darensbourg in the sixth to give him 15 homers this season, tying Lance Berkman and Sammy Sosa for the major league lead. Both home runs landed in McCovey Cove.
Bonds has 59 multihomer games, fifth on the career list.
“I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anybody as locked in as he is,” Marlin Manager Jeff Torborg said.
Bonds was in a hurry to watch the Laker-Sacramento King playoff game, and didn’t stick around long afterward.
“We played great the last two days,” he said, “but I’ve been a Lakers’ fan from Day 1, so I want to go watch the game.”
Kirk Rueter (6-1) won his sixth consecutive decision. He gave up three runs, walked two and struck out two in seven innings.
“Barry was awesome,” Rueter said. “He came through big-time for me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen two splash hits in the same game.”
Marlin shortstop Alex Gonzalez left the game because of a dislocated left shoulder. He was injured when he went after a single by Bonds in the third inning, diving for the grounder and landed awkwardly on the outfield grass. He was taken from the field on a cart.
