State Panel Declines to Hear Appeal on Santa Clarita Mine
A state board declined to hear an appeal by a company whose proposed gravel mine near Santa Clarita was rejected last month by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
In a ruling Wednesday, the state Mining and Geology Board said it cannot weigh in on the dispute between the county and concrete company Cemex because the proposal involves questions of jurisdiction between the federal and county governments.
Cemex, the parent company of Transit Mixed Concrete Co., hoped to extract 77 million tons of federally owned sand and gravel from Soledad Canyon.
The federal government had approved the project, but Santa Clarita residents opposed it.
A spokesman for the state mining board said the issue will be taken up in federal court, where Cemex has filed a lawsuit against the county.
