Santiago Delivers for Giants in 10th
Benito Santiago hit an RBI single in the 10th inning to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and give the San Francisco Giants a 1-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night at San Francisco.
After Mike Myers (3-2) walked Barry Bonds, Jeff Kent hit a bouncing single to left off Bret Prinz. Santiago followed with another single to left as the Giants won the second of a four-game set against the defending World Series champions.
Giant closer Robb Nen (3-0) pitched the top of the 10th for the victory.
Arizona starter Miguel Batista gave up only one hit through nine innings, and Jason Schmidt gave up only three hits over nine innings for the Giants. He struck out six.
Bonds went 0 for 2 with two walks, a day after hitting his 585th career home run against the Diamondbacks. Bonds needs one more home run to match Frank Robinson for fourth place on the career list.
Bonds did make a spectacular defensive play in the ninth inning when he made a running leap at the warning track to snag Luis Gonzalez’s fly to deep left.
Batista left his last start--last Wednesday against the Giants--after three innings because of a cut on his right thumb and a blister on his forefinger. The Diamondbacks went on to win 12-5.
Chicago 3, Pittsburgh 0--Matt Clement didn’t allow a hit into the seventh before Brian Giles singled, then settled for a two-hitter in his first career complete game to lead the Cubs at Pittsburgh.
Clement (3-3), whose longest previous start was 81/3 innings against the Dodgers on July 4, 2000, didn’t give up anything resembling a hit until Giles lined a clean single up the middle leading off the seventh.
St. Louis 4, Houston 1--Albert Pujols and Eli Marrero each hit two-run home runs in the first inning at Houston as the Cardinals clinched the season series with the St. Louis.
St. Louis was outhit, 10-5, but improved to 9-2 against Houston with six games left between the teams in September.
Philadelphia 5, New York 3--Bobby Abreu doubled twice and drove in two runs at New York as the Philles rallied past the Mets.
Doug Glanville scored on Jimmy Rollins’ double-play grounder in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie.
Cincinnati 6, Florida 5--Aaron Boone homered twice, including a solo blast with two outs in the 11th inning, to give the Reds the victory at Miami.
Boone’s homer off Vladimir Nunez (4-1) capped a back-and-forth game that had the Reds go ahead in the top of the ninth before closer Danny Graves blew a save in the bottom half.
Atlanta 5, Montreal 2--Andruw Jones hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the fifth, and the ailing Braves took over first place in the NL East for the first time this season with a victory at Atlanta.
The Braves lost two more players when Chipper Jones fouled a ball off his right leg and Marcus Giles sprained his right ankle trying to avoid a tag. Jones is expected to miss two to three days. After the game, Giles was put on the 15-day disabled list.
Colorado 3, San Diego 2--Bobby Estalella homered with two outs in the top of the 12th inning and the Rockies beat the Padres for their seventh victory in eight games.
