Holiday Off to Relatively Slow Start at Dune Park
Thanksgiving weekend got off to a slow start at one of the nation’s largest dune parks, where mayhem last year included a fatal shooting, several stabbings and more than 150 injuries.
By late Thursday, about 60,000 people had flocked to the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area, in the southeastern corner of California. Officials reported 18 injuries, all minor, and three arrests.
As many as 200,000 people were expected to crowd the dunes during the weekend.
The desert area is popular among off-road enthusiasts, who roam its dunes in off-road vehicles and motorcycles.
