Ultraconservative GOPs Foiled Governor’s Race
Re “Torricelli’s Electoral Move Raises Questions,” Oct. 13:
Writer Bob Ipema of San Clemente suggests that “since Bill Simon can’t win the election race he ought to be asked to step down and perhaps have anyone who can beat Gray Davis run instead.” Mr. Ipema, we did have just that person -- Richard Riordan. However, the ultraconservative wing of the Republican Party hijacked the nomination and now we will be cursed with four more years of Davis. As a moderate Republican seriously thinking of becoming an Independent, I can truly say that I didn’t leave the Republican Party; the party left me.
