Peace Talks Reportedly Halted After Town Falls
Sudan’s government said it had suspended peace talks with southern rebels and put the country on a war footing after rebels captured the town of Torit.
Foreign Minister Mustafa Osman Ismail said the current peace talks in Kenya would not resume until the government was convinced that the rebels were serious about ending the country’s 19-year-old civil war.
The talks, aimed at reaching a final accord, had been due to continue for another two weeks.
A spokesman for the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Army said the rebels had not been told of any suspension.
