Complaint Dismissed Against Orbitz
The Transportation Department dismissed charges that airline-owned ticket distributor Orbitz Inc. had waged an anti-competitive campaign against travel agencies.
The department said it saw no reason to investigate further competition complaints by the American Society of Travel Agents, concluding that neither Orbitz nor the airlines that own it have used “unfair methods of competition” against agents.
In a complaint filed in March, the 24,000-member travel agents society alleged that the airlines had tried to sabotage the agents by rolling back commissions and making it more costly for them to do business.
The venture remains under investigation by the antitrust enforcers at the Justice Department
