Leaders to Try to Return Vichy Official to Prison
From Times Wire Reports
French leaders said they would try to overturn the release from prison of former Vichy official Maurice Papon amid angry protests against the clemency shown to a man convicted of helping send Jews to Auschwitz.
Papon, 92, was freed by a court Wednesday after serving only three years of his 10-year sentence for crimes against humanity. The move angered many, including President Jacques Chirac.
Justice Minister Dominique Perben instructed prosecutors to seek a reversal of the order because the release could cause “trouble for public order.”
