Dozens of Rebels Killed, Government Says
From Times Wire Reports
Nepal’s army killed 38 rebels this weekend in clashes in the insurgents’ mountain strongholds, and 11 other guerrillas died when explosives they were carrying went off accidentally, an official said.
The army did not suffer any casualties, Defense Ministry spokesman Shiv Kumar Thapa said. There was no independent confirmation of the death toll.
The insurgents have been fighting to overthrow Nepal’s constitutional monarchy since 1996. Nepal says nearly 5,000 people--including 3,400 rebels--have been killed in the six years of fighting.
