Needed: more free speech from stars

I have read that certain high-profile actors are upset at being labeled “unpatriotic” for having spoken out so publicly against the war in Iraq. May I offer a suggestion?

The next time they are offered a project in Canada, or other locales that participate in “government-sponsored bribes,” just say no, and do so publicly so that their peers can support them. Whenever one project is kept in the United States, it saves between 50 and 120 American jobs, along with much-needed tax revenue.

The studios and networks need the stars. They have the clout to keep the work at home. If a few would be courageous enough to do this, their patriotism would never be questioned.

TRUE patriotic Americans should be outraged at the organized attempt to stop freedom of speech in this country, particularly for celebrities who disagree with this administration (“Susan Sarandon Takes Heat for Her Antiwar Position,” by Roger Catlin, April 19).

Not only are celebrities American citizens with the right to speak out and disagree, but they represent a large portion of the public who cannot individually call a press conference to talk about their views.
