Aurilia Has Appendectomy

San Francisco Giant shortstop Rich Aurilia will be out for at least three weeks after undergoing an emergency appendectomy on Monday.

Aurilia, hitting .269 with nine home runs and 42 runs batted in this season, began feeling discomfort on San Francisco’s charter flight back from a six-game trip on Sunday.

Aurilia will be put on the disabled list before the Giants’ game against Pittsburgh today. He will be on the DL for the fourth time in his career.

Mark Prior was activated from the disabled list and will start for the Chicago Cubs today in his hometown of San Diego against the Padres.

Prior has been out since July 11, when he hurt his right shoulder in a collision with Atlanta second baseman Marcus Giles. Prior left the game complaining of stiffness in his pitching shoulder and was put on the DL the next day.

New York Yankee pitcher Jose Contreras is set to make his first minor league start Thursday as part of his rehabilitation program for a right shoulder strain.... Cincinnati Red outfielder Ken Griffey Jr. and pitcher Ryan Dempster each underwent surgery Monday. Griffey had surgery on a torn labrum and a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder and Dempster had surgery on his right elbow to remove a bone chip and to repair a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament.... Cincinnati starting pitcher Jimmy Haynes went back onto the disabled list for the second time this season because of a bulging disk in his lower back.... Major League Baseball announced a five-year apparel and headwear global licensing deal that will generate more than $500 million for the 30 teams.
