Ebersol will find out who’s so vain
NBC Sports Chairman Dick Ebersol evidently is so rich that he, and he alone, will find out who was so vain in Carly Simon’s 1972 hit single. Ebersol has ponied up $50,000 for the information in a celebrity auction raising money for Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
For his winning bid, Ebersol not only will learn the identity of the person Simon skewered in “You’re So Vain,” which he has promised to keep secret, but he’ll also get a private rendition of the song and a lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and vodka on the rocks, all served up by the 58-year-old singer-songwriter.
Speculation about the target of her song typically centered on Warren Beatty (whom she had dated), Mick Jagger (who sang backup on the record) and her then-husband, James Taylor. Simon already has given Ebersol a clue: She says the person’s name contains the letter E.
