Sex Offender, 56, Faces Murder Charge
A registered sex offender was charged Friday with the murder of a 24-year-old woman and a special allegation that could bring him the death penalty.
Steven Carl Evans, 56, appeared in Orange County Superior Court and was ordered held without bail.
He was charged with the special circumstance allegation of murder during an attempted rape, which would make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted.
He is accused of stabbing Jeanette Elias, 24, of Sylmar to death Tuesday during an attempted rape in his travel-trailer near a Fullerton church. Authorities were tipped off by Evans’ sister-in-law.
