Current and former Washington State baseball players are calling for the firing of Coach Tim Mooney, who has been reprimanded by the school for repeated instances of physical and verbal abuse.

Athletic Director Jim Sterk said there were no plans to replace Mooney, who is 55-109 in four years at Washington State.

Mooney, 46, has acknowledged to shoving or grabbing players. Two years ago, he threw baseballs in the direction of a student equipment manager who had accidentally put new balls into the batting-practice ball bag.

School sanctions against Mooney include the cancellation of a $2,000 raise and mandatory counseling for anger, stress and communication. Mooney was ordered to write a letter of apology for manhandling infielder Dustin Realini in the dugout last season. Realini has transferred to Santa Clara.

“I don’t feel he’s the right person for the job,” said Nick Kenyon, who led the Cougars with 25 pitching appearances as a senior last season. “He’s totally two-faced.”
