At Least 11 Killed in 6.1 Earthquake

A strong earthquake killed at least 11 people and collapsed more than 700 flimsy homes in western China’s mountainous Xinjiang region, the official New China News Agency said. Rescuers battled thick snow, treacherous roads and numerous aftershocks as they struggled to help the victims.
The magnitude 6.1 temblor struck about 1,400 miles northwest of Beijing, the state-run China Daily newspaper said.
