The Italian Parliament passed a controversial media bill that critics say favors Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi’s business empire.

Government backers say the law breathes fresh life into Italy’s rigid media market, allowing the largely protected industry to deal with foreign competition. Opponents say it favors broadcaster Mediaset, publisher Mondadori and Italy’s biggest advertising sales firm -- all controlled by the Berlusconi holding company Fininvest.
