Federal agents Tuesday searched the Lynwood residence of former Mayor Paul Richards as part of a criminal investigation, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office said.

The spokesman, Thom Mrozek, refused to say what evidence FBI and IRS agents were looking for. He said a warrant authorizing the search was sealed by a court order.

Richards, a 47-year-old attorney, was recalled by voters in September after 17 years on the Lynwood City Council.

Earlier this year, documents show, federal investigators were looking into transactions between Richards and Compton, where he was employed years ago as an assistant city manager and labor negotiator.

Agents subpoenaed records in February concerning any payments Compton made to Richards since he left its employ. These included documents regarding a $350,000 settlement of a civil rights and breach of contract lawsuit Richards filed against Compton over its decision not to renew his contract as a labor negotiator.
