At least 19 inmates were injured and one building set afire in a riot Tuesday night at the private Cornell Correctional Facility here, officials said.

Prison officials called for help shortly after 8 p.m., and units from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol and Chino Hills Police Department responded. The riot involved more than 100 inmates, officials said.

Eight patients were airlifted to hospitals for treatment and 11 were taken by ambulance, said Tracey Martinez, spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department. All the injured were prisoners, she said.

Most of the injured suffered stab wounds, she said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries to guards.

One building was on fire.

“We’re trying to put it out from outside the walls. It’s too dangerous for us to go on the yard right now,” Martinez said.
