A shooting that police say may have resulted from road rage left a man dead on an Anaheim street Tuesday.

Michael Lee Decker, 29, of Orange was shot several times. “We’re not real clear on what happened,” said Sgt. Rick Martinez, a spokesman for the Anaheim Police Department.

The incident began about 3:30 p.m., when police received numerous calls regarding a shot fired in the 2300 block of East Orangewood Avenue, just south of Edison International Field, Martinez said.

When officers arrived, he said, they found Decker in the middle of the street. He had been a passenger in a gray Mustang but had gotten out of the car for some reason, authorities said.

Decker was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting “could be traffic-related, or it may not be,” Martinez said.

He said there may have been some sort of collision between the Mustang and a dark-colored Honda. Investigators were also looking into whether the incident was gang-related, officials said.

The car the shooter was believed to have been in was abandoned on Eckhoff Street just south of Sycamore Avenue in Orange.

“Two or three men ran from the vehicle,” said Sgt. Dave Hill, an Orange police spokesman. “We got here quickly, set up a perimeter and have teams searching the area. We will find them.”

Police were also questioning the unidentified driver of the Mustang, who they said was involved in a minor traffic accident after the shooting; authorities believe that he may have been chasing the shooters.

No one was injured in that accident.
