Portland Trail Blazer forward Zach Randolph was charged Tuesday with driving under the influence after an officer said he smelled marijuana in Randolph’s car.

Randolph’s arrest was only the latest off-court problem for a team trying to improve its image.

Randolph had been pulled over for not driving within a lane when the officer “noted a strong odor of burning marijuana coming from the vehicle,” a police spokeswoman said.

The Trail Blazers did not take disciplinary action against Randolph, saying they would wait for police test results. Randolph leads the team with 20.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.

The misdemeanor charge carries a potential sentence of up to one year in jail and up to a $5,000 fine, according to a Multnomah County, Ore., sheriff’s spokesman. Randolph is to be arraigned Dec. 30.

Charges against Darrell Armstrong were dismissed in Orlando, Fla., by a judge who ruled it couldn’t be proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the New Orleans Hornet guard intentionally struck an officer.

The dismissal came on the trial’s second day. Armstrong could have faced a sentence ranging from probation to six years in prison if convicted of felony battery on an officer and misdemeanor resisting arrest without violence.
