It’s awards season, judging by the ads
For those of you who may be a little puzzled by what seems to be an abundance of movie advertising on TV, radio and in the newspaper, one reason for the uptick is that award-season hysteria has shifted into overdrive with Monday’s mailing of Oscar nomination ballots to the 5,803 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The studios actually do want regular paying customers to see the movies they’ve been rolling out over the last few weeks, but with Oscar nomination ballots in the mail and final ballots for the Golden Globes scheduled to be sent out Monday, marketers clearly think more frequent and larger ads will also penetrate the consciousness of members of the academy and the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., not to mention the Screen Actors Guild and the directors and writers guilds.
As the pace accelerates, Directors Guild nominations for feature films will be announced next Tuesday, followed by SAG nominations on Jan. 15 and Writers Guild movie nominations on Jan. 22.
The Golden Globes will be presented Jan. 25; Oscar nominations will be announced two days later.
The DGA awards are scheduled Feb. 7, the Writers Guild on Feb. 21 and the SAG awards on Feb. 22, with the Oscars capping things off Feb. 29.
