Shootouts Decide Two Foothill Quarterfinals

Two quarterfinal contests came down to penalty-kick shootouts and the Southland’s No. 1 team lost its first game of the year Tuesday during the second day of the Santa Ana Foothill girls’ soccer tournament.

Second-ranked San Clemente beat No. 3 Santa Margarita, 3-1, on penalty kicks after tying, 2-2. La Costa Canyon knocked off No. 1 Huntington Beach Edison, 1-0.

After trailing, 1-0, seniors Makenzie Beahm and Chelsea Card scored within minutes of each other to give San Clemente a 2-1 lead. Santa Margarita forward Amy Rodriguez scored the second of her two goals with less than five minutes to play in regulation, but Santa Margarita had little success against goalkeeper Shayla Sabin in the extra session.

“Shayla stepped up big,” San Clemente Coach Stacey Finnerty said. “We practice penalty shots because we know it would come down to this one of these games.”

San Clemente faces La Costa Canyon in one semifinal. In the other semifinal, Los Alamitos takes on Mission Viejo Capistrano Valley. Los Alamitos beat Ventura Buena, 2-0, and Capistrano Valley won, 3-1, on penalty kicks against No. 6 Arcadia after a 1-1 draw.

Both semifinals begin at 9:30 a.m. The championship game is at 2:30 p.m.

Larry Medina at 125 pounds and Nick Leon at 140 each went unbeaten in six matches and had three pins to lead Covina Northview to the Lemoore wrestling tournament title.

The Vikings (10-0) finished with 238 points in the 60-team tournament. Tulare finished second with 217 points and Lemoore was third with 215.

Louis Holguin went 5-0 at 119 pounds, with three pins and two major decisions, including an 8-0 win in the finals, to help Rosemead finish third out of 86 teams with 142 points at the Reno tournament. Burns (Ore.) won the title with 216.5 points and Battleground (Wash.) was second at 196.5. Orange El Modena (26th with 77.5) and Alhambra (38th with 56.5) were the only other Southern Section schools to finish in the top 50.

Houston Milby, the top-ranked Class 5A team in Texas, held Josh Shipp to six-of-25 shooting and 15 points in defeating Los Angeles Fairfax, 80-53, in the championship game of the Houston Academy tournament.

The Buffaloes (20-0), ranked 18th in the nation, outscored the Lions, 26-11, in the third quarter to increase a three-point halftime lead. Jawann McClellan had a game-high 25 for Milby. Fairfax (9-2) had beaten Southland rival Santa Ana Mater Dei in a semifinal on Monday.
