The California Fish and Game Commission on Tuesday banned bottom trawling off the state’s coastline for spot prawns, a shrimp that can grow to 5 inches long, because the trawl nets inadvertently catch rare rockfish and other marine life that are then thrown overboard as dead.

The ban is expected to take effect within a month and end the trawling by dozens of boats off Central and Southern California. The commissioners also ordered state officials to help the fishermen switch to traps to catch the popular prawns.
