Foundation Will Donate $31 Million to Aid Youth
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation founded by computer billionaire Bill Gates and his wife said it will donate $31 million to help start up to 168 alternative high schools around the country and aid programs teaching at-risk youth. In California, part of the money will go to YouthBuild, a nonprofit Gardena group that has a partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Students ages 18 to 24 spend 40 hours a week attending classes to get their high school diploma or GED while learning carpentry and helping to build affordable housing.
