Budget cuts may force the San Diego school district to lay off 1,166 teachers at the end of the school year under a plan adopted by officials Tuesday.
The layoffs, which could account for half of the $150 million the district is trying to cut from its budget next year, would largely affect grade schools.
The district has 7,400 classroom teachers and a budget of $1.1 billion.
