Councilmen Back Policy on Unverified Alarms

In an eleventh-hour attempt to sway the Police Commission, City Councilmen Jack Weiss and Antonio Villaraigosa on Monday urged the police panel to hold to a policy of not responding to unverified alarm calls.
The councilmen’s message came as the commission prepared to take up the alarm policy today after a monthlong delay designed to give the mayor and City Council time to craft an alternative policy.
Mayor James K. Hahn’s office offered a plan that would require police to respond to the first two calls, with verification required on later calls. To deter false alarms, the mayor proposed charging residents and businesses $95 for the first false alarm and $50 more than the previous fine with each subsequent violation.
Council members rejected that approach.
