10 Injured by Gunfire in Carson

Ten people were wounded, two of them seriously, when two suspects opened fire on a crowd attending a birthday party early Sunday in Carson.

Between 50 to 75 people had gone to the home in the 2800 block of East 221st Street, where they were sprayed with gunfire about 1 a.m., said Los Angeles Sheriff’s Sgt. John Swanson.

It was not immediately known what weapons the shooters used, Swanson said.

Eight people in the crowd were treated for wounds to their arms and legs. Swanson said many of the injured had been grazed by bullets.

Two men were in critical but stable condition, one with gunshot wounds in the chest and the other with wounds in the back, Swanson said. One of the men was treated at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.

Three others also were treated at that hospital. Others were taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance and to St. Mary Medical Center and Pacific Hospital, in Long Beach.

Sheriff’s investigators from the Carson Station’s Operation Safe Streets Bureau are focusing on an argument that took place between two men and some of the party-goers about a half-hour before the shooting.

Those men, or others, returned to the scene and shot into the crowd while many people were milling around in front of the residence. Swanson said the crowd was socializing and did not see the gunmen.

“They snuck up on folks,” Swanson said. “It was cowardly.”
