The Dallas Stars are counting on Jason Arnott and Jere Lehtinen to ease their adjustment to playing without forward Bill Guerin.

Arnott scored twice and Lehtinen stretched his goal-scoring streak to four games as the Stars handed the Pittsburgh Penguins their fifth consecutive defeat, 3-1, Sunday night in Dallas.

Guerin, the Stars’ second-leading scorer with 25 goals and 50 points, is expected to be sidelined the rest of the regular season because of a severely bruised right thigh.

Guerin, who remained in a Dallas hospital after undergoing emergency surgery to relieve a buildup of blood in the thigh, was hurt Thursday night when he collided with Ottawa defenseman Chris Phillips in the third period.

“Bill Guerins are not born on trees,” Dallas Coach Dave Tippett said. “All parts of his game will be missed. Other guys have to fill in and we definitely have the people capable of doing that.”

Lehtinen scored midway through the first period, Arnott added a power-play goal later in the first, and Arnott fired into an empty net in the final minute for the Stars, 2-1-3-1 in their last seven games.

Mario Lemieux’s power-play goal with 1:48 left spoiled Ron Tugnutt’s bid for his third shutout of the season.

Detroit 5, Phoenix 2 -- Pavel Datsyuk had two goals and two assists for a career-high four points and he and linemates Brett Hull and Henrik Zetterberg combined for nine points at Detroit.

The Red Wings won their eighth in nine games (8-0-0-1) despite playing without captain Steve Yzerman, who played his first two games of the season this week after being out since having off-season knee surgery.

Yzerman is expected to play tonight at Columbus.

He was held out Sunday because the Red Wings don’t want him to play games on consecutive days.

Colorado 3, Chicago 2 -- Alex Tanguay scored at 3:38 of overtime at Chicago to help the Avalanche improve to 13-1-0-2 in its last 16 games.

The Blackhawks, meanwhile, have lost seven straight and have only one victory in their last 11 games (1-9-0-1).

Greg de Vries and Peter Forsberg assisted on the game-winning goal.

After a pass from Forsberg, De Vries skated the puck toward the crease and fed Tanguay, who faked goalie Jocelyn Thibault and scored a backhanded shot into an empty net.

Washington 2, Carolina 0 -- Olaf Kolzig made 21 saves at Washington for his third shutout of the season for the Capitals, who regained possession of first place in the Southeast Division.

The Hurricanes have won only once in 16 games -- a Feb. 12 victory over Washington -- and are 1-10-3-2 during that span.

Carolina, last year’s Eastern Conference champions, fell to 8-21-2-3 on the road and was shut out for the sixth time this season.
