A Rare New England Dynasty Comes to Close

For 53 years, Norton, Vt., town clerk Miriam Nelson has been the very model of Yankee thrift and industry.
On Tuesday, at age 81, she retired, marking not only the end of an era in the community of 214 but also the end of a family dynasty. Since 1885, the year the town clerk position was created, only three people have held the post, her great-uncle Albert McLean, her father, Edward, and herself, beginning in 1949.
