Indonesia’s parliament endorsed legislation to crack down on terrorism. The two measures, which have not yet been signed by President Megawati Sukarnoputri, would allow the detention of suspects for up to six months without formal charges.

Those committing or threatening acts of terror, or damaging public property, could face sentences from four years in prison to death by firing squad. The same penalties could apply to terrorists using or threatening to use chemical, biological or radioactive materials.
