Can the Pledge
Re “Ban on Reference to God Delayed,” March 5: Personally, I’m OK with the reference to God in the Pledge of Allegiance. It’s the reference to “one nation ... indivisible” that I take issue with. How ironic that the pledge itself is the cause of such divisiveness among us. I suggest we can the whole thing and start from scratch with something along the lines of: “As a citizen/resident of the U.S., I pledge that I will do what I believe is right as long as my beliefs cause no harm to any other citizen or resident of, or visitor to, this country or to this country as a whole. I also pledge to allow the same courtesy, without fear of retaliation, to every other citizen/resident/visitor of this country.”
