Marquette and Wade Just Don’t Have It
Eric Bush scored 17 points and tied a Conference USA tournament record with six steals to lead Alabama Birmingham to an 83-76 upset of No. 8 Marquette in the quarterfinals on Thursday night at Louisville, Ky.
Morris Finley scored 23 points and Demario Eddins had 16 points and five steals for the Blazers (18-11), who shot 51%.
Conference USA Player of the Year Dwyane Wade set a tournament record with 10 turnovers as Marquette (23-5) lost for only the second time in 17 games.

David West scored 27 points to lead No. 10 Xavier (25-4) to a 78-73 victory over George Washington (12-17) in a quarterfinal game at Dayton, Ohio.... Brian Polk scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to lead Temple (14-14) to a 66-52 victory over Richmond (15-13).... Pat Carroll made three three-pointers during a deciding 15-3 spurt to lead No. 25 St. Joseph’s (23-5) to a 68-48 victory over La Salle (12-17).... Keith Waleskowski scored 16 points to lead No. 22 Dayton (22-5) to a 74-57 victory over Rhode Island (18-11).

Craig Smith scored 10 of his 33 points in overtime to lead Boston College (18-10) to an 82-75 victory over St. John’s (16-13) in a quarterfinal game at New York.... No. 5 Pittsburgh (24-4) held Providence (16-13) to one field goal over the final 5 1/2 minutes in a 67-59 victory.... Carmelo Anthony, Billy Edelin and Gerry McNamara made six straight free throws down the stretch and No. 11 Syracuse (24-4) held on for a 74-69 victory over Georgetown (15-14).... Ben Gordon had 25 points to lead Connecticut (20-8) to an 83-70 victory over Seton Hall (17-12).

Brent Darby banked in a layup with 1.8 seconds left to lead Ohio State (15-13) to a 66-64 victory over Iowa (15-13) in a first-round game at Chicago.... Jitim Young scored 20 points and scrappy Northwestern (12-16) all but ended the NCAA hopes of Minnesota (16-12) with a 76-64 victory.... Jeff Newton had 23 points to lead Indiana (19-11) to a 77-49 rout of Penn State (7-21).

Jake Sullivan scored 12 of his 17 points in an opening flurry for Iowa State (16-12) to lead it to a 97-70 victory over Texas A&M; (14-14) in a first-round game at Dallas.... Missouri (19-9) overcame an early 18-point deficit for a 70-61 over Nebraska (11-19).... Andre Emmett rebounded his own miss and made the go-ahead basket with 12.4 seconds left to lead Texas Tech (17-11) to a 68-65 victory over Baylor (14-14).... James Wright banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to give Colorado (20-10) an improbable 77-76 victory over Kansas State (13-17).

Tim Frost scored 12 points, including four free throws in the final 14 seconds, to lead Utah (24-6) to a 42-38 victory over Air Force (12-16) in a first-round game at Las Vegas.... Rafael Araujo scored a game-high 19 points and Brigham Young (23-7) rolled to a 71-56 victory over New Mexico (10-18) .... Matt Nelson had 25 points to lead Colorado State (17-13) to a 74-71 victory over Wyoming (20-10).... Justin Reed scored 22 points and Mississippi (14-14) held on for a 62-56 victory over South Carolina (12-16) in a first-round game at New Orleans.... Collis Temple scored 18 points to lead Louisiana State (20-9) to an 85-56 victory over Arkansas (9-19).... Alabama (17-11), which was ranked No. 1 in December, saw its NCAA tournament hopes take a blow in an 82-69 loss to Vanderbilt (11-17).
WESTERN ATHLETIC
Carl English made two free throws in the waning minutes of overtime to lift Hawaii (18-10) to a 62-61 victory over Rice (19-10).... Three players had 12 points each to lead Tulsa (20-9) to an 81-47 victory over Texas El Paso (6-24).
