Fotopoulos Does It All for Courage

Danielle Fotopoulos had two goals and three assists Saturday, leading Carolina to a 5-2 victory over host Washington in front of 21,859 for its first win of the season.

Washington (4-1-1), which suffered its first loss, played without goalkeeper Siri Mullinix and forwards Mia Hamm and Abby Wambach, who were helping the U.S. national team to a 6-0 victory over England at Birmingham, Ala., where Hamm contributed a goal and an assist.

Freedom backup goalie Erin Regan gave up five goals in eight shots by the Courage (1-4-0), who outshot the Freedom, 13-10, in the rematch of last season’s Women’s United Soccer Assn. championship game.

The Freedom had its 14-game regular-season unbeaten streak come to an end.

The five goals were the most it has given up in its three seasons.

Atlanta 1, San Jose 0 -- Conny Pohlers’ first WUSA goal gave the Beat (3-1-2) a victory over the CyberRays (3-3-0) in front of 5,630 at Atlanta to avenge a 1-0 loss to San Jose two weeks ago.

It was the sixth goal allowed this season by San Jose’s LaKeysia Beene, who played 46 minutes for the U.S. national team earlier in the day.

Philadelphia 2, New York 1 -- Marinette Pichon scored two goals to lead the Charge (1-4) to its first victory of the season, beating the Power (3-4) in front of 3,165 at Uniondale, N.Y.

Pichon scored in the 60th and 81st minutes.
