Criticism Costs Latino Group GOP Affiliation
The Maryland Hispanic Republican Caucus lost its affiliation with the state’s Republican Party after the caucus chairman angered party officials by publicly criticizing Gov. Robert Ehrlich for not appointing Latinos to high-level jobs.
Delegates to the GOP’s fall convention voted overwhelmingly to recognize a rival organization, Hispanic Republicans of Maryland, as the state party’s official affiliate, ending the relationship with the caucus.
Jorge Ribas, chairman of the ousted group, said Republicans could alienate Latino voters with their treatment of his caucus and Ehrlich’s failure to appoint Latinos to high-level positions in the administration.
