2 Officers Honored for Foiling ‘Grenade’ Attack
Two police officers were honored for disarming a man threatening them with what they thought was a live hand grenade this summer at Union Station.
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta cited Amtrak officer Rodney Chambers and U.S. Capitol Police Officer Michael DeCarlo for heroism for subduing the man brandishing the device during an attempted robbery in June.
During a struggle, authorities said the suspect pulled the grenade’s pin but Chambers held the man’s hand around the device’s “spoon” to prevent detonation. DeCarlo subdued the suspect and grabbed the grenade.
A police bomb squad later determined the grenade was a fake.
