205-Year-Old Violin Is Missing From Museum
A 205-year-old violin is missing from Mission San Antonio de Padua’s museum.
The violin, built by Salinan Indian Jose Carabajal, had been on display since the late 1970s at the southern Monterey County mission, which is inside the Ft. Hunter Liggett military base.
“It’s irreplaceable,” said John Warren, director of the New World Baroque Orchestra, which specializes in the music of the missions.
Warren restored the Carabajal violin about two years ago. Since then, he has used it in a handful of concerts, the last on May 18.
