Freight Trains Collide, Derailing 5 Boxcars
From Times Staff Reports
Two freight trains collided near the top of the Cajon Pass early Wednesday, forcing five boxcars to derail north of Highway 138.
None of the four operators aboard the two trains were injured, and there were no spills that required a hazardous-material cleanup. An Amtrak train was delayed about 30 minutes, and rails were reopened at 7 a.m.
A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway spokeswoman said the collision occurred when a Union Pacific train came onto the same track occupied by the Burlington Northern train.
The accident is under investigation.
