Coverage reality

The convention season has begun the same way it has in most recent years, with a plethora of articles and seminars decrying the broadcast media news divisions’ lack of extensive live coverage. David Shaw’s column “Political Coverage Is Unconventional” (July 25) goes as far as to argue this may be why Americans don’t vote in greater and greater numbers.

People don’t vote if they don’t care or feel their issues will never get addressed. The networks have been covering this race for a year already. Distinctions between the candidates on the big issues couldn’t be more clear. Millions of Americans are deeply engaged with the process this year because of the big issues we face. But most are not, and that won’t change because there’s more coverage.

We didn’t create this sad reality, we just cover it.
