Bloom Decides to Join Ski Team

Colorado receiver Jeremy Bloom will join the U.S. ski team in Chile for training while he waits to hear whether the NCAA will allow him to play football while accepting ski endorsements.

Bloom leaves for Santiago today but says he’ll return to Boulder if the NCAA rules in his favor.

“If and hopefully when I get positive news, I’ll be on the first flight back from Santiago so I can be back on the field with my football teammates as soon as possible,” Bloom said Saturday.

The NCAA bars collegiate athletes from accepting endorsement income, although it allows students to be a professional in one sport if they compete at the college level in another.

Previously, Bloom has paid for his freestyle ski training himself, allowing him to remain eligible for college football. He started accepting endorsements last winter.

Nebraska quarterback Jordan Adams will undergo surgery to remove his spleen, sidelining the sophomore transfer from Grossmont College for at least a month.

Adams, a contender for the starting job, was diagnosed in December with mononucleosis, an illness characterized by fever and swollen lymph glands. This summer, his spleen ruptured because of complications from the disease.

USC running back Ricky Bell, Oklahoma State tailback Barry Sanders, Notre Dame quarterback Joe Theismann and Pittsburgh tackle Jimbo Covert were among the 17 players enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame in South Bend, Ind.

Five coaches were also enshrined, including Doug Dickey, who coached at Tennessee and Florida, and Hayden Fry, who coached at Southern Methodist, North Texas State and Iowa.
