Warner Gets Starting Assignment Against Jets
Kurt Warner will start at quarterback for the New York Giants this week, although his competition with rookie Eli Manning for the regular-season job continues.
Coach Tom Coughlin announced Wednesday that the two-time league most valuable player would start Friday against the New York Jets, but that Manning, the No. 1 pick in the draft, would get about the same amount of snaps with the first-team offense.
“It’s Kurt’s turn,” Coughlin said of the starting assignment, adding that it was his plan all along to have the two quarterbacks alternate starting assignments in the first three exhibition games.
Warner started against Kansas City in the exhibition opener and Manning got a start last week against Carolina. Coughlin said he will name a starter for the season opener at Philadelphia on Sept. 12 “at the right time.”

All-Pro linebacker Julian Peterson ended his holdout and signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.
Peterson, designated by the team in February as its franchise player, skipped the first 28 days of training camp because of contract issues. Peterson and his agents had been looking for a deal that would make him one of the NFL’s highest-paid defenders.
Peterson signed a $6.073-million offer tendered to him by the team to play this season. That figure represents the average of the NFL’s five highest-paid players at his position.

St. Louis Ram cornerback Travis Fisher underwent surgery on his broken right arm.
Fisher was hurt in the first half of Monday’s 24-7 loss to Kansas City, and initial reports had projected that he would be sidelined most of the season.
Fisher started 15 games last season and tied for the team lead with four interceptions. His 205 interception return yards tied for the NFL lead.
Meanwhile, quarterback Marc Bulger expects to play Friday against Washington despite bruising his knee against the Chiefs. Bulger said an MRI exam showed no problems.

Rookie quarterback J.P. Losman of the Buffalo Bills will undergo surgery today to repair the left leg he broke in practice.
Coach Mike Mularkey said he anticipates that Losman will be back at some point this season, but won’t know when until after the operation.
Losman, the second of Buffalo’s two first-round picks, broke his fibula Tuesday when he fell awkwardly at the end of a run after being hit by cornerback Troy Vincent.

Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick doesn’t think his sore right hamstring will prevent him from playing Saturday night against Cincinnati. Vick, who practiced for the second straight day, missed Monday’s workout because of tightness in the hamstring, which he irritated during last Friday’s exhibition game against Minnesota.

The NFL rejected Minnesota defensive end Kenny Mixon’s appeal of a two-game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy. He will be eligible to return to the active roster Sept. 21.

Broadcaster Pat Summerall will fill in for Mike Patrick on ESPN’s Sunday night football when the regular season begins Sept. 12. Patrick underwent triple bypass surgery Aug. 6, and is expected to return in October.
