General Motors Corp., the world’s largest automaker, faces a U.S. investigation and potential recall of 69,000 of its Hummer H2 luxury sport utility vehicles because of reports of a flawed steering part.

The inquiry affects 2003 and 2004 H2s, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its website.

The agency said it received four reports that a steering part broke, causing drivers to lose control of the 3.2-ton vehicles. One H2 veered across oncoming traffic and wound up in a ditch, NHTSA said.

“We are aware of the investigation and we are cooperating with NHTSA,” GM spokesman Alan Adler said.
