Pixar Animation Studios and Walt Disney Co. said they were pushing back the release date of their next computer-animated film, “Cars,” from November to June 2006.

Pixar Chairman Steve Jobs last month said that he wanted future Pixar films to be released in the summer to boost box office profits and so the films could be released on DVD for the lucrative holiday season, even though Pixar would go more than 18 months without releasing a film.

Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook called “Cars” “the quintessential summer film.”

“Cars” is the last movie to be released under the existing contract Emeryville, Calif.-based Pixar has with the Burbank entertainment giant. Moving the film also gives Pixar more time to find a new partner, or to negotiate a new Disney deal.

Pixar shares fell $3.16 to $87.90 in extended trading after the announcement. Earlier, the shares closed down $1.13 at $91.06 on Nasdaq.
