A letter writer suggests that the National Geographic Society’s addition of the words “Arabian Gulf,” in parentheses, under Persian Gulf, in its latest atlas (Dec. 4) would be analogous to the addition of the words “formerly Mexico” to the names of California and the other Western states that were, indeed, formerly Mexico.

What a good idea! Knowledge of both geography and history would surely benefit.
