The marquee big men of the Big West Conference posted numbers that most expected Saturday afternoon, but the play of several others carried host UC Irvine to a 74-67 victory over Cal State Fullerton.

Seven-foot center Adam Parada and 6-11 teammate Stanislav Zuzak each scored 18 points to lead the Anteaters (9-6, 4-2). Despite being bothered by a sore hamstring, 6-10 center Pape Sow of Fullerton (5-9, 1-4) did a yeoman’s job with 19 points and 15 rebounds.

But Irvine’s supporting cast included six points and four rebounds in 23 minutes by forward Matt Okoro, who made his first start in six games. Starter Jeff Gloger, a 6-4 guard, had a team-high nine assists and seven rebounds, four more than Parada. Reserve guard Ross Schraeder finished with nine points and three assists and made three three-point shots, all at important junctures in the second half. And reserve forward Nic Campbell had three assists, a steal and two rebounds in 13 minutes. His three-point basket with 14 minutes 57 seconds to play helped stifle a Fullerton rally that had cut Irvine’s 14-point lead to six.

“They gave us offense off the bench that we haven’t had,” Coach Pat Douglass said.

Fullerton shot 40.9% from the field, prompting Coach Bob Burton to call it his team’s worst performance since the Titans’ 77-60 season-opening loss at Northern Arizona.

Fullerton threatened at the outset of the second half with three quick baskets, including a three-pointer by Yaphett King that made it 38-33 with 18:42 left.

Long Beach State (4-11, 2-4) shot only 36.4% in losing its fourth in a row.

Louis Darby had 20 points for the 49ers, but leading scorer Kevin Roberts sat the remainder of the game after picking up a technical foul in the first minute of the second half. Roberts had seven points

“My team rule is if you get a technical, you sit for the rest of the half,” Coach Larry Reynolds said.
