A Los Angeles teenager remained in critical condition Wednesday as authorities searched for the two men suspected of shooting him and a friend shortly after they had been dropped off at a Mission Viejo bus stop.

The victims of the shooting were identified as John Joseph Hunter, 18, and David Anthony Gomez, 21, both of Los Angeles. Hunter was being treated at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center for a gunshot wound to his head. Gomez’s neck was grazed by a bullet, but he didn’t need to be hospitalized.

The motive for the shooting remained unclear Wednesday. But Orange County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Amormino said there was no reason to believe the shooting was gang-related.

Hunter and Gomez were with two other men at a Crown Valley Parkway bus stop about 5 a.m. Tuesday. They had been dropped off there after a party and were waiting for a ride home. Two men walked up and argued with the group at the bus stop, then opened fire with a semiautomatic handgun and fled in a blue Dodge van.
