Las Posadas has a rich tradition

As a 20-year Santa Fe, N.M., resident, I enjoyed staff writer Craig Nakano’s article, “Santa Fe’s Spirit” [Dec. 21]. Often when I read articles about the city, I don’t even recognize the Santa Fe I live in.

But I disagree with his description of Las Posadas as “kitsch.” Las Posadas has been celebrated in much the same way since the entry of the Spanish in the 16th century. It is an authentic celebration and beautiful in its innocence. If you were to spend Christmas in Mexico, you would witness the same pageant with the same cheesy costumes and slapstick pantomime in nearly every village and town in the country.
