U.S. Fed Cup Team Is Named
Federation Cup captain Zina Garrison announced Wednesday that 47-year-old Martina Navratilova will join her Olympic doubles partner, Lisa Raymond, as well as Chanda Rubin and Jill Craybas, on a U.S. team that will play in the quarterfinals in Innsbruck against Austria.
Missing from the team are four top-10 players -- Serena and Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Lindsay Davenport. Davenport has chosen to sit out the Olympics and Fed Cup to preserve her fragile right knee; the Williams sisters and Capriati prefer to rest after Wimbledon before playing singles in the Olympics.
Also, the United States Tennis Assn. announced that former U.S. Open and Wimbledon semifinalist Lori McNeil will be Garrison’s Olympic team assistant coach.
