Deadwood lives up to its good review

I was pleased to read Beverly Beyette’s cover story about Deadwood, S.D. (“Set Your Watch to 1876,” June 27). When I went on a road trip in 2000, I was one of those people who thought Deadwood would merely be an overnight stop between the Badlands and Black Hills and Yellowstone. I was pleasantly surprised by the town’s late-1800s gold rush charms. It’s still one of my favorite cities, and I’m glad to see it get recognition.

For budget travelers going to Deadwood, I would add to the list of hotel choices the Penny Motel and Hostel, (877)-565-8140, www.pennymotel.com. It’s close to downtown, and a hostel bed in a clean, modern four-bed dorm room starts at $13 per person per night.
